Written in 1948, on the eve of apartheid in South Africa, this novel about a Black man’s country under white man’s law was an instant worldwide best-seller and is regarded as one of the best novels of our time. Stephen Kumalo, a Black minister from the countryside, travels to Johannesburg to find his sister and his son, both of whom have have vanished into the great city. He finds them, but his son has killed a white man, and his sister is a prostitute.

The book “is a social protest against the conditions that led to division, instability, and disintegration of tribal community, and explores racial and social injustice and the search for reconciliation,” a reviewer at amazon.com said.
