Our service of Choral Evensong observes the Feast of the Annunciation, which falls on March 25 — the day that celebrates when the Angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and informed her she was to bear the Son of God. The music for this day, nine months before Christmas, focuses on Mary: “Sing We of the Blessed Mother” is the processional hymn. The Anthem is Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria.” And Choral Evensong, of course, traditionally includes the Magnificat, Mary’s song of praise. The service is Gerald Near’s “St. Mark’s Service.” Near (b. 1942) is considered one of the foremost composers of church music writing today. An organ prelude is at 4:45 pm. The Cathedral Chamber Choir will sing. Dwight Thomas is Canon for Music and Precentor. A freewill offering is taken, and a reception follows.
