Murray was the first Black female Episcopal priest, a Freedom Rider, and the first African-American to earn a degree from Yale Law School. As a lawyer, she articulated the intellectual foundations of the civil-rights and women's rights movements. These accomplishments are set against the backdrop of uncertain finances, chronic fatigue, her sexual ambiguity, and tragic losses both private and public.
