In this Bible study, we will read and discuss in depth the prophet Jonah—who’s story is more like an ancient novella than like the prophetic texts we are more familiar with such as Isaiah or Amos. Jonah is called by God to preach repentance to Israel’s ancient enemy, and he famously flees his vocation, reluctant to let God be merciful to the Ninevites. We will look at some of the literary and historical issues, but we will focus on what is the message of Jonah for us as Christians, and how can we live and proclaim a gospel word of mercy.
